There is a reason why Italian Progressive Rock Rock Progressivo Italiano is an independent sub-genre of Progressive Rock and there is no such sub-genre as Spanish, French, or German Progressive Rock: back in the seventies most of the Rock bands whether they were Progressive or not used to sing in English, and Italy was the place where musicians started to defend their own language and a huge scene of Italian bands singing in Italian emerged, that was a very dared but original movement.
PFM's debut album "Storia di un minuto" was an absolute unprecedented album: I'm not sure of what were the influences that these guys had but I wouldn't doubt to consider The Moody Blues, Jethro Tull, Yes, Procol Harum, King Crimson, and maybe, Gentle Giant, so, probably it is fair to say that British Rock was a strong influence for this record, but that doesn't mean the music on it hadn't originality. The eclectic mixture of the most exquisite instruments as flutes, violins, acoustic guitars, and organs with the powerful bass, drums, and electric guitars accompanying the original Italian lyrics made this record a very strong and historical one.
This album has it all. Later, PFM recorded two albums in English with translated versions of some of the songs this album contains, but for me, the best stuff comes in the mother tongue.
I, 5 Dove An exciting blend of classical wonderful orchestrations and Heavy Prog swirling Hammond, flashy Minimoog and heavy guitar , in a sumptuous and dynamic atmosphere, but with a subtle tender piano conclusion in the instrumental Mondi Paralleli.
Dreamy with beautiful mellow work on violin and piano, topped with melancholical vocals in Umani Alieni. A funky bass, biting wah-wah guitar, and a heavy guitar solo in the end in Pecore Elettriche. Pop meets rock with powerful vocals and a swinging rhythm in Mr. Non Lo So. Another swinging rhythm, with wah-wah guitar and slap bass, in the instrumental Transumanza. The final composition Transumanza Jam instrumental is at the level of the first track, very exciting and dynamic, from swirling Hammond organ and pitchbend driven Minimoog to heavy guitar, the interplay is awesome, to me it sound like late Seventies Al DiMeola, wow!
Apart from the first and final two compositions the music on this new PFM album with Franz Di Cioccio and guest Flavio Premoli as the only original members is not my cup of tea. And unfortunately the very talented violin player Lucio Fabbri has a pretty modest role on this album, I was lucky to witness a Dutch PFM gig with him, that was awesome.
