It is important to understand that you do not need to have "something wrong with you" to schedule an individual session. Given the demands placed on student-athletes, it can be common to need time to discuss mental health, sport performance, or a combination of the two.

Typically, student-athletes seek individual sessions for any of the reasons listed below. However, if a student-athlete is unsure what they need, they can schedule a minute consultation with a member of the Clinical and Sport Psychology team.

In addition to individual sessions, the Clinical and Sport Psychology department can provide group sessions for student athletes as necessary. The Clinical and Sport Psychology staff is a unique part of the athletic department.

Since students must complete 20 hours of community service while in the program, the SEP Club has taken a prominent role in organizing at least two community service events per month, open to both club and non-club members.

These events not only provide students with opportunities to accumulate community service hours to meet their graduation requirement, but more importantly, they help students to establish and build connections with the Morgantown community.

These unique course offerings are designed to provide students the opportunity to utilize their academic background, prior course-work, and individual skills in a way that allows them to experience community need and make a real difference.

Conferences are ideal opportunities for students to network with other undergraduate and graduate students and faculty members from a variety of universities. Attending conferences demonstrates genuine interest in graduate school which could potentially distinguish a student from similarly qualified candidates.

Some students have presented their capstone research projects at conferences. Recently, students have attended the annual conference of the Association for Applied Sport Psychology. In addition to unique study abroad experiences, the sport and exercise psychology program has a unique international partnership with Halmstad University, in Halmstad, Sweden.

The SEP program runs a spring-break study abroad trip ever other year, where WVU students have the opportunity for cross-cultural experiences in and out of the classroom at Halmstad University and around Sweden. Additionally, every fall the majors-only section of SEP interacts with peers at Halmstad University via online educational platforms and assignments.

Students interested in pursuing a career in sport and exercise psychology know that most jobs will require that they must first complete a graduate degree before entering the job market. Thus, the primary mission of the undergraduate major in sport and exercise psychology is to prepare students for graduate studies across a number of related disciplines. This program provides students with elective options that have allowed them to meet the entrance requirements necessary to be successful gaining admission into graduate programs related to sport and exercise psychology, counseling, physical therapy, occupational therapy, public health, public administration, exercise science, sport management, business, law, and many other disciplines.

What makes the undergraduate major in sport and exercise psychology unique? First, it is the only major of its kind in the state of West Virginia and one of the few undergraduate programs in the nation that allows students to specialize in sport and exercise psychology. Further this program has six faculty members dedicated to providing a quality learning experience for students. Students often pursue employment to use their sport psychology training to help them work with athletes of all ages and ability levels, business executives, the military, and other related settings.

SEP Professional Issues in Sport and Exercise Psychology 1. An introduction to professional issues relevant to the field of sport psychology. Provides opportunities for students to gain practical experiences within the field. This is a service-learning course which includes a requirement of 10 hours of volunteer service.

Psychological Perspectives of Sport. An examination of personality and behavioral factors as they affect participation in sport. Topics such as stress and sport, body image, aggression and the sport participant, and the licensure of sport psychologists highlight the course.

This course is designed to help students understand and utilize in their own lives, the skills and constructs taught from a theoretical perspective in SEP This course will help students enhance their knowledge of sport and exercise psychology constructs and allow them to implement these skills within a laboratory setting.
